There are plenty of resources available on the Internet on how to remove the green screen from images in GIMP. This is fine for the occasional time you need to do this, but if you need to frequently go through all the steps, it can become a cumbersome process.
Luckily, a Green Screen Remover Plugin for GIMP exists and has been made available for everyone to use. Credits go to the respective author. Installing and running this plugin in GIMP can be a bit confusing, especially if you don’t often deal with 3rd party Scripts or Plugins.
First, download the GreenScreen.py
file that is mentioned from the article above. To install it, you need to place it in the “plug-ins” directory where GIMP can find it. This location will differ based on the OS that you’re running GIMP on.
On MacOS, the green screen python file should be saved in a directory that resembles the following:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins/
If you don’t see a “plug-ins” directory inside this location, you may have to create it. As a side-note, plug-ins (*.py files) are not the same as scripts (*.scm files), which are stored here:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.10/scripts/
On Windows, the alternative plugins location is likely something along the lines of:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\plug-ins
To run the plugin, first open your image with the green background, then select the new “GreenScreen” option from the “Select” menu.
