It seems like every other year I need to clean out the female Anode Rod threads in my hot water tank, as it contains a build-up of rust, Teflon tape and other gunk that prevents the Anode Rod to fit and seal properly.

What has worked well for me is to use a 3/4″-14 NPT tap to clean out the threads.

Make sure to fill and drain your hot water tank to get rid of the debris that may end up on the inside.
